Into the Maelstrom $14.95

“Throughout your Innsmouth investigations, you have ventured into tide-hollowed caves and dripping tunnels—but these watery caverns are only the antechamber of the Deep Ones’ domain. A hidden city rests beneath the choppy waves of the North Atlantic, slumbering at the bottom of the ocean. If you’re going to protect the world from suffering the same fate as Innsmouth, you’ll need to venture into the heart of the storm.

Within the Into the Maelstrom Mythos Pack, you’ll find the final scenario of The Innsmouth Conspiracy cycle for Arkham Horror: The Card Game, inviting you and your fellow investigators to dive into the darkness beneath the waves and confront the Deep Ones in their own city—putting an end to this threat forever. Combined with the addition of new player cards to upgrade your decks, Into the Maelstrom is a perfect capstone for a cycle of danger and mystery.”

Personally, I’ve really enjoyed this expansion’s new mechanic that was introduced – the Bless/Curse mechanic. It’s been a theme for the whole set as many cards interact with the Bless/Curse tokens. Specific events or cards cause players to add the tokens to the Chaos Bag. It was a neat way to manipulate the odds of success as each Bless token added +2 to your check while each Curse token was a -2. Regardless of which you pulled, you would still have to pull another token!

These tokens were also removed permanently after they were pulled. This mechanic really shined when you played with an Investigator who took advantage of these tokens and built your deck around the theme of Bless/Curse tokens.

If you didn’t know based on the title, the Innsmouth Conspiracy Cycle also takes it’s inspiration from the horror novella The Shadow over Innsmouth by H.P. Lovecraft. Which is free to read at the link provided. It’s not a long text – it’s only short 5 chapters. But if you read this before you play through the Innsmouth Conspiracy Cycle you’ll get a sense of what the “Conspiracy” is all about.

I’d also recommend reading the Arkham Horror Novella The Deep Gate by Chris A. Jackson. It’s another quick read and it also illuminates the story of Silas Marsh who was one of the investigators added with this expansion cycle.

The Innsmouth Conspiracy is wrapping up in April and I can’t wait to find out how it all unfolds.
