‘Infinite’ is Infinitely Derivative- Spoiler Filled Review

If you need a movie with goofy action about a bunch of quasi-immortal beings, I have something for you. It’s called Infinite.

Infinite‘s lead character is burdened with having memories and flashbacks from his past lives. A burden that nearly destroys him. His life changes when he is invited into an organization of others like him – people that remember their past lives and can use the skills from all of their pasts. He has to prove himself to join their ranks and prevent the ultimate end.

The cast is led by Mark Wahlberg and includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sophie Cookson, Jason Mantzoukas, Rupert Friend, Wallis Day, Toby Jones, and Kae Alexander. It’s directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Equalizer).

Major Spoilers for Infinite Below the Trailer

Everything Old is Old Again

The concept of accessing past lives isn’t exactly unique, nor is that ability giving people superpowers or extraordinary skills. Ancient factions warring over things isn’t unique, either. The hope is that the characters and universe created around those things stand out. They don’t.

This movie has nothing really new to offer. Its plot, characters, and even its action sequences are really derivative. I get that Paramount was looking for the next big franchise, this isn’t it.

This is essentially Assasin’s Creed – with even worse Rotten Tomatoes scores.

The Rest of It

This movie really likes its cars. It opens with a Testarossa vs vintage Aston Martin V8 Vantage (this movie looks to be sponsored by the carmaker as you can see by the number of Astons featured) chase and some of its best action involves automobiles. Many of them are magically resistant to damage. Can I have the unscratchable paint option on my next car, please?

Sometimes a list is just better:

– The CG in this movie is horrible and it relies on it a lot
– The multiple attempts at humor flunk
– Did I mention how derivative it is?
– For a movie about reincarnation the adult cast really lacks diversity
– It’s boring
– What the heck is up with Chiwetel Ejiofor’s accent?
– This all could have been prevented if Bathurst shot himself in the head with his fancy soul collecting chip gun to keep himself from reincarnating

Should I See Infinite Even After Reading This Review?

If you like stupid action and bad plots, yes. If you’re a gearhead that likes car chases, yes. Anyone else, no. It’s a repeat of boring ideas with new actors that put in some half-assed performances. It also looks cheap. This should be a skip.
