We haven’t seen the last of the shiny toilet seat wearing Suicide Squad member.

John Cena’s Peacemaker gave us both belly-laughs and betrayal in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. This week, Entertainment Weekly shared the first look at the team for the upcoming Peacemaker series on HBO Max.

This article contains spoilers for ‘The Suicide Squad’, got it? Okie dokie, onward!

The series is set to premiere some time in January 2022 on HBO Max, and will see Peacemaker leading a team of superhumans on a black ops mission.

The addition of the antihero Vigilante (Freddie Stroma) has fans buzzing. Adrian Chase is a former district attorney who turns to vengeance after his family is murdered. You know, that ol’ yarn!

The photo also shows a collection of A.R.G.U.S. agents, including John Economos (Steve Agee) and Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland) from the control room cast in The Suicide Squad. Other characters, like Clemson Murn (Chukwudi Iwuji) and Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), appear to be series-original characters.

It sounds like the team will be facing a threat that could destroy the whole planet. Regardless of his problematic approach to peace, saving the world seems like pretty morally unambiguous territory– right?

Gunn also told Entertainment Weekly that he “loved the 1970s Captain America [TV movie] and thought that it would be fun to make “a really f—-ed-up version of that with Peacemaker.” We couldn’t agree more.

He also shared that he would be down to sign on for a season 2, should the series prove a success. Gunn wrote the episodes for the upcoming season, and directed 5 of the 8 episodes. We know that the Guardians franchise will keep him plenty busy in the upcoming years, so we’re relieved to hear he’ll stick around for Peacemaker.

Through the fall season, fans will be looking forward to more sneak-peaks now that the series is in post-production phases. It’s clear the team won’t be dealing with a bad guy vs. good guy scenario here.

What is the terrible threat to the world? Will the series be as funny as the source film? Will it be as violent and bloody? Our bets are on ‘yeah’.
