Brendan Fraser Joins ‘Batgirl’ Cast as Mysterious Villain
The internet’s favorite actor Brendan Fraser joins the DCEU as a yet-unknown villain in the upcoming Batgirl film.
It’s time to exercise your squealing muscles because Brendan Fraser has been cast as the villain in the upcoming Batgirl movie. Sure, it’s difficult to imagine the delightful Hollywood icon as a baddie. I mean, our first instinct is to hug the guy. But we’re still looking forward to seeing him have fun bringing life to a Gotham villain.
Brendan’s Bad Guy: Who Will He Play?
Deadline reported the casting this week, and their sources believe he’ll play the supervillain Firefly. In the character’s original comic book story, he was a film special effects artist turned arsonist after experiencing financial hardship.
The character’s backstory has changed several times over since his first appearance in Detective Comics #184. So his on-screen origins could also be a film-original. And after the roaring success of The Suicide Squad, casting a beloved fan-favorite like Fraser could indicate that DC is leaning into the lovability of traditionally ‘bad’ guys.
Did we just use this news as an excuse to write a Brendan Fraser appreciation post? Oh yeah. And we feel no shame about it. But now we’re trying to imagine a DCEU without Brendan and honestly? It’s not good.
Everything We Know About Batgirl
The upcoming film is still in pre-production. Leslie Grace will star as Barbara Gordon’s Batgirl, and Jacob Scipio has also joined the cast as a yet unknown character.
The film will be directed by Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fllah. The script was written by Christina Hodson and the film will be produced by Kristin Burr.
Batgirl will premiere exclusively on HBO Max, but we don’t yet know exactly when. But thanks to this latest casting announcement, we’ll just be scouring the internet for every bit of wholesome Brenden Fraser moments we can find until the premiere.
