On Monday, Jason Ward of MakingStarWars.Net shared two pictures that were reportedly taken on the set of The Mandalorian season 3.

Thanks to MakingStarWars.Net, we may have seen our first set photos of the upcoming third season of The Mandalorian. The images are a little blurry and largely without detail, but they could spell out some changes in the upcoming third season.

Where the Heck are We?

Ward points out that this seems to be a repurposed and repainted portion of set previously used to create Nevarro. It seems like some idyllic trees and maze-like outdoor structures have been added to the set.

It’s likely that The Mandalorian won’t be returning to Nevarro any time soon with these major set changes. It’s not terribly surprising, but this leaves us asking what (or where) we could be looking at.

Obviously some variety of tree exists on too many planets to speculate about. It stands to be seen whether this is the start of a forest situation, a manicured private garden, or anything in-between.

The cohosts of the show floated the ideas that it could be Naboo, or perhaps part of Luke’s training hideaway. But if we’re assuming this is part of a garden, there are any number of characters who we could expect to find surrounding themselves with beautiful scenery.

…and What the Heck is That Thing?

Ward also points out a smaller rectangular structure that reminded the hosts of a childhood Death Star toy or an AT-AT foot. Parts from this set required a crane to move. And was that vague color just gray primer or a dreary shade of Imperial off-white?

Exactly what this particular set piece will be is vague. Maybe it’s a ship, or a doorway, or perhaps, as one viewer helpfully added in live comments, a space toilet.

Both of these set photos include what looks to be blue screens and perhaps something that could be a Steadicam. The Mandalorian has, up until this point, been a production famous for its use of indoor virtual sets and an avoidance of green screens. These developments could be an indication of a shift in production style or an episode director’s preference for outdoor shooting and slightly older technology.

The Mandalorian still has a few possible storylines from the last season to wrap up. Katee Sackhoff still hasn’t verified whether or not she and Bo-Katan will be back, but Dinn now has the Darksaber and could have business on Mandalore. Plus, Morgan Elsbeth hinted to us (in her own idyllic garden area) that we may get to meet Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Assuming production stays on course, The Mandalorian is scheduled to come back for season 3 in December. Until then, we will stare at blurry set photos and speculate.

What do you think those set structures look like? Do you prefer the indoor virtual sets that The Mandalorian has utilized so far, or green screen technology? Which plot hook are you most looking forward to seeing followed up on in season three? Let us know in the comments!
