‘Hades’ Becomes First Video Game Ever To Win Hugo Award
Despite the award being best known for literary science fiction, Hades wins the 2021 Hugo Award for Best Video Game.
The Hugo Awards were presented during the 79th World Science Fiction Convention in Washington DC on Saturday, December 18th. The awards are voted on and presented by the members of the World Science Fiction Convention. The official rules of the Hugo Awards make a note that their Science-Fiction limitations are more like guidelines.
“While the World Science Fiction Society sponsors the Hugos, they are not limited to sf. Works of fantasy or horror are eligible if the members of the Worldcon think they are eligible.”
This year, Hades won the award for “a one-off category created as per WSFS rules by DisCon III”. It’s the first ever Hugo Award for Best Video Game.
Hades is an isometric, hack-n-slash, roguelike game. While we’re giving out awards, it joins such titles as 1999’s The Mummy movie for Most Attractive Cast award. This was offered by me, just now.
The Team Accepts the Award
Supergiant Games’ writer and creative director, Greg Kasavin, responded on Twitter saying he and the team are “incredibly honored” to win the award.

The nominees were announced back at the beginning of the year. Hades won out against some strong contenders.

Hades is an Awards Darling
This is not the only award Hades has won. It also won awards at The Golden Joystick Awards, The Game Awards, British Academy Games Awards, IGN, Polygon, Washington Post, and more. It is currently ranking Overwhelmingly Positive reviews with over 150k reviews on Steam.
