The LVO reveals have come and gone, and they left more than a few fans feeling a little empty.

Thursday night (or Friday morning, depending on where you live) was an exciting time for fans of tabletop wargaming. Besides the Las Vegas Open kickoff, Games Workshop promised a big reveal with their first preview of 2022. Loyal fans were treated to some full reveals for the new Aeldari, the next stage of Necromunda and Kill Team, a new big bad for Horus Heresy and…another battlebox for AoS. While battleboxes are always fun, I think we all expected a lot more, and a lot of watchers were disappointed. Here are some thoughts on everything we saw (and something we should have).

Arena of Shades

The AoS reveal from the event was the upcoming battlebox, Arena of Shades. The new box will pit the Daughters of Khaine against the Nighthaunt in the newly renamed city of Har Kuron. The Daughters get a new hero in the form of the Gladiatrix, and the Nighthaunt snag the Scriptor Mortis and the crossbow-toting Craventhrone Guard. Nighthaunt fans are probably overjoyed at including some ranged support in their lists, and the new hero looks suitably spooky.

However, the Gladiatrix is easily the most boring model in the Daughters range, and she’s the only new thing they get. A model standing stock in an army as dynamic as DoK doesn’t fit, even with a twirling whip. Plus, we JUST got a Daughters boxset; it seems to me high time to give someone else a shot like…oh, I don’t know, the Umbraneth? While we don’t know what any of these new things will do, the Nighthaunt came out on top this go round.

No Battletomes?

Considering that we just had a new release, it was surprising not to see the Fyreslayers or Idoneth battletomes. For that matter, we didn’t even get an indication that they were on the way, as is usually the case. One must wonder why they chose to omit these and how long we’ll have to wait to have these armies viable again. Idoneth is undoubtedly not in the worst state thanks to their Broken Realms update, but the Fyreslayers are quickly being outpaced in the new meta. Here’s hoping we didn’t see a reveal because the tomes will be out in the next couple of weeks.
