Hi, it’s me. I’m that friend. The Quiet Year is back in stock, and you don’t want to miss it. Here’s why.

The Quiet Year by Avery Alder is one of those RPGs that everyone should play at least once. It’s such a simple thing at first glance. A small game that encapsulates a year. A single, solitary year before the Frost Shepherds return and the game ends.

But in that year, in 52 cards, there’s a world waiting to be discovered. You’ll draw a map with your friends. Perhaps you’ll survive the Winter. Or find a world you want to explore more.

My first brush with the game was on Friends at the Table at the start of the Marielda arc. But even if you’ve seen the game played a dozen times, there’s so much more depth to be discovered. The Quiet Year is worth exploring.

The game is played with 52 cards, so you could use playing cards, but right now you can get an incredible set of oversized game cards and the booklet and everything. And you should, while it’s back in stock. Everyone should play it once, and this is your chance to dive in with both feet.

The Quiet Year – $51.82

The Quiet Year is a map game. You define the struggles of a community living after the collapse of civilization, and attempt to build something good within their quiet year. Every decision and every action is set against a backdrop of dwindling time and rising concern.

The game is played using a deck of cards – each of the 52 cards corresponds to a week during the quiet year. Each card triggers certain events – bringing bad news, good omens, project delays and sudden changes in luck. At the end of the quiet year, the Frost Shepherds will come, ending the game.
