Sometimes you just want to turn your brain off and just “click-to-win” and Amazon’s Lost Ark is appealing to the masses. Amazon’s “New” Hit?

Some of you might be thinking, “Wait, Amazon makes games?” And the answer is that they are the Publisher of this particular game but they are in the video game business now, yes. The Developer of Lost Ark is Smilegate RPG. What’s surprising is just how well this game is doing a day after release. Lost Ark did have some release day hiccups. There servers were taken offline for some unplanned maintenance for a several hours yesterday. But once the game servers went back online the players came flooding in.

Lost Ark has had quite a lot of buzz lately for various reasons. One major reason is that it’s actually not a “new” game. It’s been a popular hit in the Korean market for some time. Amazon has basically “ported” the game over to western markets. When you combine the hype with the look of the game and then add the Free-2-play aspect on top of it, then it’s not surprising that it’s kind of blowing up right now.

Hack And Slash Lootfest

There’s one comparison we have to make and that’s with the Diablo franchise. Blizzard has been having some issues lately. And fans of the Diablo franchise have been waiting for more Diablo for years now. The last PC release was Diablo 3 and that game is turning 10 years old this year. And while it did get a major update with the Reaper of Souls expansion in 2014…that was almost 8 years ago, too. And the announcement of Diablo Immortal didn’t exactly go so well.

Yeah. You know exactly what I’m talking about.

While Diablo 4 was announced at BlizzCon 2019 but Blizzard hasn’t scheduled a release date. So fans of the genre have been waiting for a game to help fill that soulstone sized hole in their head heart. After a pretty big marketing push by Amazon it’s no wonder that Lost Ark has swooped in and said “Hey, play me instead!” It’s got the polish it needs to compete and Amazon seems to have figured out how to handle a massive influx of players with their servers.

Lost Ark is the second game Amazon has published that has made a pretty big splash on release. We’ll have to wait to see how “sticky” this game is in the long run. Will western players keep playing at the rate they are currently at? How many of those players are just giving it a test drive because of the big marketing push? While the game is F2P there’s got to be a point where it starts bugging you to make a microtransaction or two, right? Will that point turn players off or will they just keep clicking-to-win?
