Halo‘s Master Chief will remove his helmet for the first time in over 20 years. He must have terrible helmet hair.

The upcoming Halo TV show on Paramount+ will have Master Chief remove his helmet for the first time in the series. Master Chief is being played by actor Pablo Schreiber, and we know what he looks like, obviously. But how will fans respond to the removal of the iconic helmet?

It is certainly a pretty major creative decision by the showrunners. Halo’s executive producer and 343 Industries’ Studio Head of Transmedia, Kiki Wolfkill, stated during IGN Fan Fest that the removal of the helmet was important for the story of the show.

I think we set out to tell a character story and a personal story. And once we really got into what that story was, it became clear that you really needed to see the person in the armor and under the helmet.

You will see his face. For some people, it’s been a moment 20 years in the making, and for other people it is something that feels very hard to imagine. We absolutely respect both sides of that fence, those who really want to see Chief’s face and those who really don’t. But for the nature of this story, it felt really important to connect with the Master Chief in a different way, and that meant showing the face.

With so many helmeted characters in pop culture, there’s rarely a right or wrong way to handle the decision. Helmets clearly stifle the actor’s ability to emote and express emotion clearly. But, the want to stay accurate to the source material has merits as well. Ultimately, we’ll just have to see how the reveal shakes out. If it is integral to the story, it could very well be worth it.

Personally, I’m in favor of the removal. I think it’ll make whatever emotional impact the moment has more memorable.

What do you think? Should Master Chief keep his helmet on?
