Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli’s critically acclaimed comic about a dystopian America is coming to HBOMax. Check out the first DMZ trailer!

DMZ was published from 2005 through 2012. The series is inspired by writer Brian Wood’s experiences in NYC during the aftermath of 9/11 and US invasion of Iraq. In a dystopian near future the US has has been ravaged by the Second American Civil War. Manhattan has been turned into a demilitarized zone aka DMZ. Around half-a-million people remain on the island, mostly those too poor to evacuate and some just too stubborn to leave.

It may be a DMZ in name, but there are competing militias and several rogue factions on the island that are constantly fighting for turf and resources. It’s a dangerous place to be.

The First DMZ Trailer

The first DMZ trailer sets the stage and the tone. It doesn’t look like we’ll be following Matty (the main character in the comics) in the show, but Dawson’s Alma Ortega seems to be based off Zee. The situation and surroundings seem to be the same, and the setting leaves room for all kinds of stories. Delgado Nation (run by Parco Delgado) and what looks like the Triad are definitely a big players here.

I didn’t read the entire run of the comic, but I’ve read enough that I want to check this out. It’s only four episodes and Rosario Dawson is in it. Pretty dang hard to say no.

DMZ leaps off the pages of the acclaimed DC graphic novel [by Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli] into the visual landscape of a dangerous and distorted Manhattan as one woman navigates a demilitarized zone in a harrowing quest to find her lost son.

Rosario Dawson leads the cast and it includes Benjamin Bratt, Venus Ariel, an Hoon Lee. Ava DuVernay is producing and directing.

DMZ debuts on HBOMax on March 17th.
