After the AdeptiCon announcements and teasers we now have a pretty clear picture of what the final codex order will be.

There are only a handful of Codexes left for Warhammer 40,000 to be released. We’ve been guessing at their order this entire edition. However, after AdeptiCon, GW confirmed a few things. Let’s see if we can crack the final codex order using the process of elimination.

Codexes – Who’s Next?

The Aeldari codex just arrived. Tyranids are next. Those two things have been confirmed and expected now for a while. AdeptiCon helped to solidify who’s next though.

There are indeed TWO Knight books coming out. Chaos Knights and Imperial Knights were both announced at AdeptiCon 2022. It’s unclear if these books will come out the same weekend or if GW is looking to do a split release. But it doesn’t really matter. Those are the next two books (along with a nifty new Chaos Knight Army Box, too).

Now, if you stuck around until the very end of the Warhammer Preview Online presentation, you probably got the final tease about Chaos Space Marines. The second wound for CSM has been a long time coming. And GW confirmed a new CSM codex is also on the way.

via Warhammer Community

“Yes, Chaos Space Marines players – you’ve beseeched the Ruinous Powers, and they have listened.* We know you’ve been waiting patiently, and your time is soon! Not only is a new codex coming that brings much-anticipated updates to the rules for Heretic Astartes, there will be a slathering of new miniatures to reignite your blasphemous fervour. “

So that pegs a Chaos Space Marine Codex after the two Knight books. Here’s the question: was GW messing with us by confirming the CSM was after the Knights? Could there be a book in between the Knight books and the CSM book? Technically, it’s still true — a CSM books is after Knights, right?

I don’t think GW is that mean though. Why bother teasing the wound change and coming out to say “a CSM Codex is on the way” if you’re just going to push that out after the rest of the books. And speaking of the rest of the books, we also know the final two books for 9th edition that need updates.

The Final Two Codexes For 9th

If you’re keeping track at home the last two codexes are Astra Militarum And Chaos Daemons. Now, here’s where we get into some major speculation territory. We don’t know which order those two books are going to be released. We also don’t know if GW is planning on doing a combo CSM/Daemon book either. Think about it for a moment. We saw GW combine the Harlequins and Ynnari into the Aeldari book. Could they be planning to do the same for the Chaos Daemons?

There are a LOT of Daemons though. If GW did choose combine the two books the size of that codex would rival the Space Marine codex. That said it’s not implausible! It seems like GW has had to combine books due to various logistical reasons. The tail end of 9th edition has been a bit of a rough go in terms of releases and scheduling. That’s one more factor to consider.

Whatever plays out we know that there needs to be an Astra Militarum codex for sure. So, with that in mind, here’s our updated order of releases for the final codexes of 9th edition:

  • Tyranids – Releasing Soon
  • Chaos Knights/Imperial Knights – Unsure if they are releasing at the same time not, but they are confirmed next
  • Chaos Space Marines – teased to be after Knights
  • Chaos Daemons*
  • Astra Militarum*

*Unclear which order, but these are the final two Codexes.

So there you have it folks, those are the final books for 9th. It’s going to be a coin flip between a Chaos Daemon book and the Astra Militarum — but the end is in sight.

Do you think we’ll see a combo CSM/Daemons book or will we get a seperate Chaos Daemon book? Which codex is after CSM: Astra Militarum or Daemons?
