The acclaimed director brings his vision to the century’s old tale of a boy who wants to be real. Here’s the first look at Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.

We’ve gotten a bunch of adaptations of Pinocchio recently, this is the only one that looks like it’s worth watching. This stop-motion musical is full of whimsy and magic, and the many adventures of the wooden boy come to life. See if you can recognize the all star voices in its cast.

I’m always up for stop animation. The art form is fascinating to me. Kubo and the Two Strings is one of my more modern favorites, and I’m a big fan of the Brothers Quay and Panique au VillageThis looks like a treat.

The director recently spoke to Vanity Fair about the inspiration behind his adaptation of the 1883 storybook.

“I’ve always been very intrigued by the links between Pinocchio and Frankenstein. They are both about a child that is thrown into the world. They are both created by a father who then expects them to figure out what’s good, what’s bad, the ethics, the morals, love, life, and essentials, on their own. I think that was, for me, childhood. You had to figure it out with your very limited experience.”

Being a del Toro project, the story is going to be influenced by his compassion and unique view of humanity. It also moves the story from a fairy tale world to Italy between WWI and WWII, during the rise of fascism and Mussolini. The boy comes to life “in an environment in which citizens behave with obedient, almost puppet-like faithfulness.”
