We’re revisiting the Necron Combat Patrol to see how many points it is and what to get next.

When Games Workshop released all the points as a free update along with the latest Combat Patrols we got to thinking — how do the previous Combat Patrols stack-up? In this series we’re going to revisit the older Combat Patrols, breakdown their points, and talk about where to build from that box. For previous breakdowns check the bottom of this article.

Today, we’re tackling those living metal machinations known as the Necrons.

Combat Patrol Necrons Points Breakdown

Necron Combat Patrol Box

1x Necron Overlord – 90 Points + Wargear
10x Necron Immortals (can alternatively be built as Deathmarks) – 160 Points
3x Tomb Blades – 60 Points + Wargear
1x Night Scythe (can alternatively be built as a Doom Scythe) – 120 Points

Points Total: 430 + Wargear

Naturally, we’ll be taking this up to a 2000 point list. We’ll leave a little extra for Wargear at the end. With this core of an army you’ve got plenty of room to work with. It’s got beefier Immortals instead of Necron Warriors for the Troop option. And it’s also got some fast moving units in the Tomb Blades and Night Scythe. You could always opt to build them as their alternate options, too.

Overall, this box is actually a really solid starting point — especially when you consider the alternate options. With all those options we’re going to start right off the bat by doubling down and going for a second Combat Patrol.

Combat Patrol Necrons – Next Steps

With two Combat Patrols we’ve got LOTS of build options. In terms of Troops, we could split the Immortals into groups of 5 or we could add in some Deathmarks. And having a Doom Scythe instead of a Night Scythe should give us a bit more firepower (although we lose out on some army mobility). For now, we’ll go with that swap which will add 45 points to the total. That second box puts us at 430+475+wargear.

Personally, I’d also want to snag two boxes of Necron Warriors to fill out the Troops selection. A Blob of 20 Necron Warriors isn’t easy to push off an objective. That adds another 260 points to the list as well. Oh and we might as well toss in those 6 Scarab Swarms we get from the boxes, too. That’s only 90 points (or 45 for each unit of 3). Not bad to harass things. Now that we’ve got a good firebase, some flyers, Tomb Blades, and two HQs how about we look at adding some heavy hitters?

Maybe I’m biased, but this model is just cool. The Void Dragon clocks in at 300 points and will cause your opponent some headaches for sure. I’ll be honest, I’ve think I’ve gone off the theme of the Army with the Void Dragon so I’m just going to add two more models I think look cool: The Triarch Stalker!

Two of them will run you 240 Points + Wargear. At this point our total is 1795+Wargear. There’s a lot of really cool units to pick from here. The final selection I’m going to add in is a unit of 3 Canoptek Wraiths for 105 points. These always seem to cause problems and you may find yourself wanting more in your army later…

Army-wise, we’re at 1900 Points and you’ll still need to add wargear. So I think we’re at a good spot to pump the breaks. To recap this is a rough look at the list we’ve thrown together:

3x Tomb Blades

1x Night Scythe

3x Canoptek Wraiths

Points Total: 1900+Wargear

It’s got a solid firebase, some fast elements to put pressure on the mid/backfield, and some heavy hitters to clean-up as needed. Just don’t leave the Void Dragon unsupported! In the future, as your collection grows be sure to check out all those other characters the Necrons have. They add a TON of utility to the army and might fill a few gaps you find with this list. This Combat Patrol box is one of the better options out there in terms of utility. So if you are starting a Necron army start with the Combat Patrol core and go from there.
