‘Red Sonja’ Film Casts the She-Devil With a Sword & More
She’s fought alongside the barbarian hero Conan, and now she’s finally getting (another) feature. The Red Sonja movie has cast its leads.
Fans of high fantasy and warrior women alike have been waiting a really long time for a new Red Sonja project. Sure, we got the 1985 film starring Brigette Neilson and Arnold Schwarzenegger, and that was alright – but we deserve a full-force feature.

The Red Sonja Movie Finds its Sonja
A project featuring the red warrior has been in the works for a while now. Originally Hannah John Kamen (Ant-Man & the Wasp, Ready Player One) was cast as the lead role, but she dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Now the project is moving forward with Matilda Lutz.
Whoever plays the She-Devil with a Sword will have to undergo plenty of heavy sword training. Of course, Lutz isn’t exactly new to playing a total badass. Here she is in Shudder’s Revenge giving off “absolutely not to be f*cked with” vibes.
The series has also added Umbrella Academy‘s Robert Sheehan in a major role, though we’re not sure which one. One potential villain for the series will come in the form of Sonja’s half-sister Annisia, who will be played by Batwoman star Wallis Day.
Other supporting cast members include Michael Bisping, Martyn Ford, Eliza Matengu, Manal El Feitury, and Katrina Durden.
Other Cast & Crew
The casting announcement came today from Millennium Media. The film’s director M.J. Bassett is best known for her work on Solomon Kane, and has also directed episodes of Ash vs. Evil Dead and Power. She sounds absolutely thrilled to be taking on the project, saying:
“I’ve wanted to make a Red Sonja movie since I was a teenager – she has been a powerful presence for me and a character that I have always wanted to bring to the screen with my own voice and vision. When I met Matilda Lutz, I knew she had all the magic I was looking for and could see the complexity and depth she would bring to Sonja.”
The Red Sonja movie will be scripted by Joey Soloway (Transparent) and Tasha Huo. Sonja herself is the brainchild of Roy Thomas and Barry Windson-Smith, who created her for Marvel’s comic book Conan the Barbarian. She’s since been written and drawn by some comic book greats. One of her most iconic writers, Gail Simone, is serving as producer for the show.
