Tim Burton is putting his own gothically whimsical twist on the Addam’s family – check them out in this ‘Wednesday’ first look.

Charles Addams’ macabre family of misanthropes has a special place in the black hearts of every weirdo, geek, oddball, and misfit I know. The family has come to life thanks to iconic portrayals from beloved actors like Raul Julia, Anjelica Huston, Christina Ricci, Christopher Lloyd, Carolyn Jones and John Astin before them, plus that one time they were in Scooby Doo. And now we know what the next rendition of the famous freaky family will look like.

First Looks at Wednesday‘s Addams Family

Thanks to Vanity Fair, fans of America’s creepiest family finally have a first look at Netflix’s new imagining of the classic comic strip. Behold, the Addams family! *snap, snap*

Co-showrunner Alfred Gough tells Vanity Fair that the show wanted to really lean into the very original source material when it came to the characters’ looks and mannerisms. With regard to Gomez,

“[…] the silhouette to look[s] more like the Charles Addams cartoons, which is Gomez shorter than Morticia, versus the kind of suave Raul Julia version in the movies.”

Between She-Hulk, Lucifer from Sandman, and now Morticia, it’s shaping up to be a Tall Girl Fall – just in time for spooky season!

Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán are seen playing the famous lovebirds Morticia and Gomez Addams. According to Gough, we’ll learn more about a teenage Wednesday and her relationship with her parents.

“Wednesday’s not scared of sharks or creepy crawlies or anything, but she’s afraid of emotion. Their overt displays of affection drive Wednesday crazy.”

The show will also explore Wednesday’s relationship with her mother. In fact, it’s set to be a major influence on the arc of the first season.

Don’t worry, the show won’t forget about the playfully violent sibling squabbles between Wednesday and her brother Pugsly.

What to Expect from Wednesday

The series follows Wednesday as she attends the Nevermore Academy. When a series of mysterious murders occur, the gloomy teenager must get involved. The show promises to explore the personality and experiences of an older, more independent Wednesday. And it’s a role that actress Jenna Ortega is well suited for.

Tim Burton famously turned down the opportunity to work on the 1991 adaptation. Now, he serves as executive producer and directs four of the season’s eight episodes. It’ll be Burton’s first series and is set to premiere on Netflix sometime this fall. Showrunners Miles Millar and Alfred Gough are best known for their work on Smallville.
