Andor season two is already in production and will take us right up to Rogue One. Luckily, season one left quite a bit of setup to work from.

We’re still talking about Andor. I had pretty medium hopes for this show, and all of them were exceeded, and then some. So it was no surprise to hear that Andor was not only already given the green light for a second season, but already started filming. We don’t know a ton about it yet, but showrunner Tony Gilroy and Cassian himself, Diego Luna have revealed a little bit. We know there will be a time skip if not a few of them, and season two will take us right up to the start of Rogue One. It looks like season two will have a lot of ground to cover in a relatively short period of time. But season one set them up perfectly to succeed.

Becoming a Prominent Figure Within the Rebellion

Throughout season one Cassian is just a lone dude working towards his own self-interest and briefly trying to find his estranged sister. Despite his adopted mother believing wholeheartedly in the cause and his father dying at the hands of the Empire, Cassian spends some time being convinced to throw everything in for the Rebellion. There’s no love for the Empire, of course, it’s a matter of self-preservation.

Season one was set up perfectly to show him being radicalized as he experiences the full horror of the Empire firsthand and works alongside people who are already fully committed to the cause. By the end of the season, he’s ready to join up or die trying, and we know from there Cassian is about to become a prominent member of the forming Rebel Alliance.

Well, as prominent as a spy gets through that required armor of anonymity. By the time Rogue One comes about, Cassian will be one of the guys. So now we just need to see how he gets there from here.

Mon Mothma’s Departure From the Senate

Mon Mothma (and Genevieve O’Reilly) have been a master class in the quiet rage of somebody trying not to drown while playing the long game. Every move she made was deliberate, calculated, and designed to help the budding Rebellion while not disrupting the seat of power or access to wealth awarded to her through her prominence and senate seat. For now, she can do the most good by playing in both fields at once, but we know that she will eventually leave the senate and lead the Rebellion full-time. Andor hinted at this inevitability with the rising tension of the Ghorman humanitarian crisis which we know will eventually lead to the Ghorman Massacre and trigger Mon’s departure from the Senate.

The Other Notable Star Wars Spies

We spent a lot of time with Luthen this season, who the Empire code-named “Axis.” I’m excited for Luthen to come back and hopefully get a little more of his story, but his designated name is a reference to some of the galaxy’s other most well-known (to us) spies. Fulcrum and Axis are synonyms, and Fulcrum was the code name of Ahsoka Tano and later Agent Alexsandr Kallus. Ahsoka is one of the next characters we will see a live-action show from. But Agent Kallus was a former ISB agent who became disillusioned with the Empire, became a spy, and eventually defected.

The first season of Andor was so good about not including cameos unless they were important or meaningful, so I can’t say that I would expect either of these characters to make an appearance. But it’s not outside of the realm of possibility and it’s also possible that we could hear references to any of their work throughout the galaxy.

Rogue One

Knowing that Andor season two will take us right up to the opening of Rogue One, there is a lot of ground to cover. At some point, Cassian will acquire his sarcastic droid counterpart in K2, and be reunited with Melshi. We’ll probably see the Rebellion begin to receive the earliest intelligence about the Death Star. There may even be appearances by characters we recognize from the 2016 movie. There’s a lot to speculate about. But if the goal is working seamlessly up to Rogue One, there’s potentially a lot to see.

What do you hope to see in Andor season two? What do you hope we see happen as the show ramps up toward Rogue One? Which characters would you like to see make an appearance? Let us know in the comments!
