‘Invincible’ Turns 20 – Robert Kirkman on the Comic & Hit Show

3 Minute Read
Jan 23 2023

Invincible is coming back to Amazon this year – just in time for its 20th anniversary. Writer Robert Kirkman talks about the show and why you should read the comic.

Fans have been waiting two years for news. Don’t worry; it hasn’t been canceled. After the success of the first season and a fan campaign, Amazon renewed Invincible for a second and third season. There’s still a lot of story after that cliffhanger. If they’re staying close to the comic, get ready for more Sequids, a new big bad, and following Omni-Man to the outer reaches of space.

The comic celebrated its twentieth anniversary this weekend, and fans got a teaser as a gift. While Mark didn’t give an official date, it will be out this year. Calm down, Allen.

20 Years of Invincible

The first book came out this week, back in 2003. It came out when big crossover events were the thing for big publishers like Marvel. Invincible‘s self-contained story was a refreshing change for many readers, as was Kirkman’s unpredictable style that subverted superhero tropes. There are real stakes. Its characters go through trauma and take damage – they don’t always bounce back or make it out alive. It’s something we see more often now, but in 2003 it wasn’t expected.

Writer Robert Kirkman, illustrator Cory Walker, and artist Ryan Ottley sat down with CBR to talk about the legacy of the comic and the hit animated show. The show’s format has allowed the team to add more dynamic and intense action and give characters like Debbie Grayson more time in the spotlight. Kirkman mentioned that there might be some plots in the show that he couldn’t work into the comics. No details. He wants them to be a surprise.

Read the Book

Kirkman also encouraged fans of the show to pick up the books if they haven’t.

“It’s one of the only superhero stories you can pick up and read the volumes and not have a bunch of different stories you also need to read. I think its strength is its self-contained nature. It’s not as complicated as reading Spider-Man. I mean, where would you even start? It’s not a complete story with a beginning, middle, and end. Invincible is.

“For show fans, by all means, try the comic. There will be a lot of fun winks and nods that you’ll only get if you’d read the comics as we get deeper into the show. I think it’ll make the viewing experience more fun. You’ll also get a glimpse of the road map we’re using for the show. It definitely won’t spoil everything if you read the comics. There are going to be some fun twists along the way.”

I agree. The entire run is available in three easy-to-find collections. Start with Invincible Compendium Vol. 1.
