Thanks to some newly added quality-of-life changes added to Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, the game is shaping up to be better than the original!

The 2010s were a weird time for Star Wars games – EA had the exclusive rights to make them. EA didn’t like single-player games at this time. So the only titles fans got were a reboot of Star Wars Battlefront and its sequel. And that was so badly monetized that it killed loot boxes for everyone.

Star Wars fans just wanted a single-player game. There was one promising game in development from the studio that brought them Dead Space, but it was unceremoniously canceled. The answer didn’t come until 2019 thanks to Respawn Entertainment.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

The story follows ex-Jedi padawan Cal Kestis who survived Order 66 and went into hiding. He forgets much of his training to live a normal life under the Empire’s rule. That is until he reveals his Force abilities and becomes a target of the Imperial Inquisitors. Cal eventually gets wrapped up in finding a secret Jedi holocron that contains info on Force-sensitive kids throughout the galaxy.

The game was a huge hit for EA and loved by Star Wars fans and gamers alike. It featured Metroidvania maps and Souls-lite combat mechanics. Fallen Order had its fair share of issues, but it looks like the sequel will work on avoiding them as best as it can.

Respawn Confirms Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

“The greatest teacher, failure is. Luke, we are what they grow beyond. That is the true burden of all masters.”

A sequel was confirmed as in development in May 2022 with the title Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. The game takes place 5 years after the first game. Cal Kestis is fighting to survive the Empire and anyone else looking to kill Jedi.

The game was originally set to release on March 17th but was recently pushed to April 28th. Devs said it was pushed to give them time to work on ironing out as many bugs as they could.  This will probably make the game’s release much smoother than the last. The first game was full of glitches, especially if you played it on a PS4 Pro (like I did.) Respawn took a lot of the feedback from the first game seriously.

But Enough About Bugs, Let’s Talk About Rideable Animals!

In the newest issue of Play Magazine, the game’s director Stig Asmussen said the game will feature fast travel and rideable mounts.

“We will feature both fast travel and rideable creatures to help players quickly get from point A to B, and back to A…the fast-travel is point to point, and the rideable creatures offer a way to quickly negotiate between points and explore what is in between.”

This is fantastic news. The maps in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order had a ton of backtracking and it could get confusing at times. Rideable mounts and fast travel will cut down on that confusion. Plus it’s fun and very on-brand for Star Wars. After all, this is the world of the Tauntaun, Varactyl, Blurrg, and more. Who hasn’t wanted to ride a Tauntaun?!

New Game, New Planets

IGN recently gave us 9 mins of footage showing off a new planet called Koboh. The planet appears to be mostly full of mountains and caves with different wildlife that will do their best to kill Cal the moment they see him. Players also will have to contend with different enemies like electric staff-wielding goons and old battle droids from the Clone Wars.

Developers have been working hard to make sure the game is ready by its new release date. Star Wars Jedi Survivor is releasing on PS5. Xbox Series X/S, and PC April 28th, 2023.

Let us know if you are looking forward to more Cal Kestis in the comments or hopeful another Star Wars game will be made without the Jedi.

May the Force be with you.
