We’re not sure what Hugh Jackman meant in a recent interview, but he could have meant that there are multiple Wolverines in Deadpool 3. And we want that.

What we know about the upcoming Deadpool sequel: Free Guy‘s Shawn Levy is directing, with Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin (both known for Bob’s Burgers) writing. The writers’ room also includes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who both worked on Deadpool 1 & 2. The confirmed cast includes Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and Leslie Uggams is back as Blind Al. Emma Corrin was recently cast as an unnamed villain.

It’s also been confirmed that they’re not holding back just because Deadpool is a part of the MCU. The writers are going for an R-rating for the third chapter, making it a first for Marvel Studios.

Pretty standard stuff at this point in production. Then there are a bunch of new plot possibilities… because Hugh Jackman said something odd in an interview.

Multiple Wolverines?!

Jackman was talking to Le Parisien (via Cinemablend) about returning to his role of Wolverine and being a part of the Deadpool franchise when he said this:

“Yes, it will even be a dual role. Ryan and I have been friends for twenty years; we have a lot of fun together. We are filming this summer.”

The production info is cool and matches with the release date we have, but what does he mean by “dual role”? Jackman didn’t define it in the interview, so of course, fans are wondering if we’ll be seeing more than one Wolverine on the screen.

It’s not entirely out of the question – the Multiverse Saga is the main MCU storyline right now, after all. Maybe Wade gets a hold of Cable’s time travel device and visits other realities and timelines? More than one Wolverine could be a part of that kind of story. It also leaves the door open for a lot of other options. We’ve already seen some of the X-Men in Deadpool movies – maybe there will be more. I vote for this rivalry.

Other possibilities include Jackman playing Wolverine and another totally different character. Flashbacks. Is he both a villain and a hero? Will they be friends? Enemies? Frenemies? With himself? With other versions of himself? Will he have the creepy bone claws from X-Men Origins: Wolverine? What is going on here!?

I’m assuming we’ll get actual answers when Deadpool 3 comes out on November 8, 2024.
