The Cait Sith is out of the bag, as Final Fantasy VII Rebirth announces that Matt Mercer will be voicing Vincent Valentine.

Matt Mercer continues to rack up successes on his mission to voice the favorite characters of your childhood. This past weekend at New York  Comic Con’s Final Fantasy panel, the team announced that Matt Mercer, Dungeon Master of Critical Role, will be the english actor for many people’s first goth bf, Vincent Valentine.

Prior to this announcement, Mercer has also voiced Ganon in Tears from the Kingdom the legendary Rashemi Ranger, Minsc (of Minsc & Boo and Baldur’s Gate fame) in Baldur’s Gate 3. Now, with the vampire Vincent Valentine in his roster, he’s just a Chrono Trigger remake away from voicing characters from the foundational games of your earliest days.

Pranks For The Memories – Mercer’s Surprise

If you haven’t been playing/watching along with the ongoing saga of the Final Fantasy VII Remake, hype has been steadily building for the latest chapter, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which has teased both familiar locations as well as familiar faces who haven’t had any screen time. Characters like Vincent Valentine.

The news is especially amusing, considering that Matt Mercer has previously voiced many characters in Final Fantasy VII Remake, though these were NPCs like “Wall Market Thug” that players would encounter while randomly wandering around Midgar.

This fact played into an extensive prank played on Mercer after he landed the role. During the Comic Con panel, Mercer talked about his experience auditioning for Vincent Valentine. After he “put all [his] energy into the audition” Matt Mercer heard nothing for nine months. Then, when he got the callback, he was only told that he’d play an NPC.

When he was brought to the booth to record lines, the screen with the script started to glitch, only to fade to black and then reveal another character: Vincent Valentine. The rest is history, but we’ll have to wait to play it.

I think Matt Mercer would probably voice Janus/Magus from Chrono Trigger, but who would you pick?
