Magic isn’t a straight line; it’s a big ball of timey wimey stuff. Tame the timelines with the Universes Beyond: Doctor Who Commander decks.

Welcome in Praetors, Planeswalkers, and mysterious alien Time Travelers! The Universe Beyond series has always brought awesome worlds into Magic, from The Walking Dead to Lord of the Rings. However, for their latest set, WotC is looking to the stars and beyond. They’ve knocked on a few police call boxes and met some kind gentlemen, turning their adventures into the upcoming Doctor Who Commander decks.

There are three decks covering different eras of the Doctor’s life, plus a fourth for all the deadly foes they’ve come up against. There are even a few Sagas detailing iconic episodes from the series. Whichever Doctor (or villain) is your favorite, there’s a new EDH deck for you.

Blast from the Past

Doctor Who Commander decks - Blast from the Past

Chronicling the adventures of the Doctor from his beginning to right before the “modern” remakes, the Blast from the Past deck is Bant legendary good stuff. Most of the mechanics in the Doctor Who Commander deck revolve around “historic” cards.

That means all your legendary, Saga, and artifact cards will get a huge boost in this deck. As such, the deck itself is packed with legendary creatures and artifact generators. If you’re a fan of the old series or just want to crank out as many legends and artifacts as possible, this is the deck for you.

Timey-Wimey

Timey-Wimey Doctor Who Commander decks

Probably the most iconic Doctors, the Timey-Wimey deck revolves around the Ninth, Tenth, and Eleventh Doctors and the companions that accompanied them. David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor is the one most modern fans associate with the name. As such, he’s the face of the deck, but Matt Smith and Christopher Eccleston also make an appearance.

Mechanics-wise, this deck revolves around suspend and “time travel,” a new mechanic. Whenever you time travel, you can select any number of cards you own that are either suspended or have a time counter, then add or remove one. This will allow you to determine when your spells are cast from exile, making sure you get exactly what you need when you need it. If you want to manipulate the flow of time, pick up this deck.

Paradox Power

Covering the two most recent Doctors, the Paradox Power deck is a Temur deck that hates casting spells the normal way. “Paradox,” a new mechanic found on many of the cards in the deck, rewards you from casting spells from anywhere except your hand. That means flashback, suspend, and madness will be powerful in this deck. Once you’ve activated Paradox, you’ll get some awesome buffs, like counters, untap, or even extra casts! If you like bending the rules just a little, this is the one for you.

Masters of Evil

The Doctor has faced several deadly enemies over the years, from the sinister Daleks and Cybermen to the enigmatic Master. This Grixis deck lets you command some of his worst and offers your opponents choices with no winners.

The new villainous choice mechanic is similar to council’s dilemma, but there are no good options for anyone but you. This deck is lovingly called “group slug,” as it wants to take out as many opponents at the same time. If you want to play the bad guys of Doctor Who, grab this villainous offering.
