As we end the year, let’s talk about 40K 10th Edition’s top 5 generic Chaos HQs.   With that, let’s dive in to what you should expect to see when fighting any of the forces of Chaos.

Again, these are just the generic heroes, as while there are a ton of special characters that are good, we don’t need to dive into them. These good ole HQ choices run the show for the current “bad” guys of 40K and while not all are created equal there are some that are better than others. A lot of the current Chaos armies take a specific special character to activate some aspects of their army.  From the Primarchs to a crazy yahoo riding a Juggernaut – these special characters have eared their space within lists.

#5 – Death Guard Foul Blightspawn

This guy helps amp up a few units of Plague Marines and creates a very annoying choice for your opponent to deal with.  The ability to throw out Fights First to the unit they are attached to is amazing.  On top of that, he even has a very powerful Flamer attack too.  Then, to add more to the gross cake that is a Plague Marine unit, he even allows another character to join them as well.  This can be huge as you easily create a little pseudo Death Star that is just a hard thing to really chew through as they pile out of a Death Guard Rhino, set up shop in the middle of the field, and just wreck anything that gets too close.

#4 – Thousand Sons Infernal Master

This guy is one of the newest Thousand Son kits to come out, and thankfully, he has stayed good in this updated edition.  Being able to give out Sustained Hits to a unit can be very powerful with all the bolter action the army can throw out.  I wish they had a Terminator version for this model, as it could be pretty sweet to see him walking around with those guys versus being stuck to Rubrics.  Also, the sustained hits rule gives weapons equipped by the unit Sustained Hits, so it isn’t just stuck to the ranged options.  The extra master-crafted like roll is also good to help spike a save as needed or at least get that pip of damage when available.

#3 – World Eaters Master of Executions

Remember how powerful Fights First is? How about giving it to a unit of crazy blood-crazed maniacs who can get advance and charge?  Or how about also throwing out some awesome close-combat attacks with his murderous precision-based attack.  I know a lot of Crypteks hate getting hit by this guy as all those Devastating Wound attacks get poured into that poor robot nerd leading all those Wraiths around the tabletop.  Throw in the Berzerkers Glaive enchantment and this guy is coming in with an extra d3 attacks that gain an extra d3 damage.  I know a lot of games saw him coming in for the World Eaters with 8+ attacks that reroll hits and wounds versus Character units (Which units become if they have a character attached).

#2 – Chaos Daemons Lord of Change

This is a rather interesting HQ in that he creates this sort of flying damage tank for the Chaos Daemons.  He can fly about, shoot lasers, and just be tough enough to not delete if he gets too close.  The Lord of Change is one of those units that always has to be watched if points go too low, and having 3 on the tabletop becomes a problem.  It’s like an Eldar vehicle that can fly around and punch you in the face if needed.

#1 – Chaos Space Marine Chaos Lord

This guy is the poster child for a very powerful unit to add to your CSM army.  Attached him to some Chosen and watch as he amps up their damage potential with a free “Command” point usage option.  Beyond just his extra utility, you also have the ability to throw out a ton of damage with his once-per-game “Fight for the Right to Party” power that amps up his damage and attacks for the turn.  A few careful swings from his hammer, a ton of his friends punching whatever they charge, and your Dark Pacts working means you will wreck a lot of things you charge in with.   Thankfully, he only takes up a single space in a Rhino, too, and is worth every penny of points you have to pay.

Honorable Mentions

World Eaters Juggernaut Lord is a great little HQ that loves holding the Favour of Khorne enchantment and does alright in a pinch when they need to charge.  The Great Unclean one with Enhancement seems like a steal as well due to how hard he can be to get through as he sits in the middle of the field causing issues.  The Master of Possession is also something interesting, too especially with some of the upcoming Characters that are showing up in units and utilizing him to “snipe out” those characters with some psychic shooting attacks.
