The first look at The Crow reboot is filled with hard-hitting action and plenty of gore, but will it appeal to long-time fans? See what you think.

The franchise is based on the gritty comic by James O’Barr, who wrote it as a way to deal with his fiancee’s death at the hand of a drunk driver. The first big-screen adaptation of The Crow, released in 1994, was steeped in tragedy. Its star, Brandon Lee, was fatally wounded by a prop firearm on set before filming was complete. A stunt double, CG, and script rewrites were implemented to complete the project. The movie opened at number one and became an instant cult classic and retains a loyal fan base thirty years later.

The first movie was followed by three more movies, a television series, as well as numerous novels and comic books. It also spawned a video game and CCG.

It’s been nearly a decade since The Crow last got a movie, and this reboot started on a bad foot. The first look was met with jeers and complaints from long-time fans. The most common comparing the new tattoo-covered character design to Jared Leto’s Joker in Suicide Squad.

The Crow First Trailer

The first trailer is here and it’s, well… take a look and see what you think.

This adaptation isn’t direct from the comics. While the overarching plot and themes are intact, many details have been changed. This isn’t always a bad choice, but that’s not the case here. No more carjacking and random thugs; instead, some sort of large criminal organization is after Shelly because she saw something she wasn’t supposed to.

The “we should make a John Wick movie but different” plan is very apparent in this trailer. As much as I like the cast in other projects, this is just meh. It feels like they put a Crow skin on a modern-style, generic action movie rather than something that started with the characters and built up. Getting fans to buy tickets is going to be an uphill climb.

Cast & Details

It stars Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven and FKA Twigs as Shelly. It also includes Danny Huston, Isabella Wei, Laura Birn, Jordan Bolger, David Bowles, and Dukagjin Podrimaj. Director Rupert Sanders (2017’s Ghost in the Shell) from a script by Zach Baylin (Creed III). It’s a bit of a mixed bag of good and really bad.

Bill Skarsgård takes on the iconic role of THE CROW in this modern reimagining of the original graphic novel by James O’Barr. Soulmates Eric Draven and Shelly Webster are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right.

The Crow hits theaters on June 7th.
