Roll20 hit 10 million players, doubling its userbase since March 2020. With big changes on the horizon, here’s a look.

Roll20 is one of the biggest and most popular virtual tabletop platforms. And, according to reporting by Dicebreaker, it’s not hard to see why. The popular online platform reports that it doubled users since the onset of the pandemic.

Roll20 Doubles Users From 2020

“The number of users on Roll20 has doubled in almost two years, going from five million users to more than 10 million. The PR representative labelled the increase in users as a “pandemic-fueled growth,” mirroring the success experienced by Dungeons & Dragons publisher Wizards of the Coast, which reported record sales during 2020.”

Wizards of the Coast has continued to grow, and with D&D where there’s a will there’s a way. And for many people, Roll20 is that way. Past reporting from Roll20’s Orr Group report indicates that D&D players dominate their demographics, accounting for more than 50% of games played through their platform.

It makes sense. Over the course of the pandemic, more and more people have been finding their games online. Early lockdown measures necessitated the migration. But once the big step was taken, it’s surprisingly easy to use Roll20.

After all, it’s a one-stop shop that gives you voice, video, and gameplay aids, including a virtual battle mat if need be. You can access rules compendiums, manage digital character sheets, and find support for a variety of games. D&D of all stripes 5E, 4E, 3.5 – even Pathfinder are all there. But smaller games as well, like Lancer and Monster of the Week and Blades in the Dark are there.

And Roll20 takes an active role in supporting the gaming community as well, with showcases of new and indie games featured regularly on their Twitch stream.

Roll20’s New CEO Promises Change

The big milestone seems to be only the beginning. Earlier this week, Roll20 announced a new CEO, Ankit Lal, a Google veteran. Lal spoke about the challenges the company faced and the direction it’s taking in the future in an interview with Polygon:

“We’re not just building for Dungeons & Dragons,” Lal said, “but we’re trying to build out for the entire tabletop RPG industry. We have hundreds of games on our platform that people are playing. I think we have 800 character sheets now. We have over 10,000 SKUs on our marketplace. And so while Dungeon & Dragons is the biggest, there is more to it than just D&D.”

Happy Adventuring!
