The new Grand Cathay Battalion box for The Old World is a quite a deal. But this one goes beyond the fact that it’s a big discount.

If you’re excited about the upcoming Grand Cathy army for Warhammer: The Old World you’re not alone. This is really the first brand new army for old school Warhammer Fantasy fans in a very long time. It’s one of those armies that was always teased in the lore but never arrived on the tabletop. Heck, it showed up in video game form first! But now it’s on the way with a brand new army box. And this one is a really good deal. But that goes beyond the MSRP for this one. Allow me to explain.

The Battalion Boxes for The Old World have clocked in at the price point of $185. The same will likely hold true for the Grand Cathay army, too. But there’s a few major differences here. For starters, all of these miniatures are brand new. And I don’t mean re-prints from old sprues new either. These were clearly designed using the newer tech that GW has been using. In fact, I’ve made the case that this army is perhaps a little too good looking for The Old World.

In fact, IF the Grand Cathay army was coming to Warhammer: Age of Sigmar, I’d expect this one to cost a lot more than $185. I can prove it. Which is what we’re going to do today.

Cities of Grand Cathay?

Imagine for a moment that instead of the Cities of Sigmar army we got released that these Grand Cathay miniatures took their place. In fact, all of the units in the Battalion box have a 1:1 swap for the Cities of Sigmar. We’re going to go through them and price out each one as if it was it’s counter part in AoS.

Contents:

30x Jade Warriors

10x Jade Lancers

2x Grand Cannons

Now, if these were Cities of Sigmar unit it would look like this:

20x Freeguild Steelhelms – $116

10x Freeguild Fusiliers – $60

10x Freeguild Cavaliers – $130

2x Ironweld Great Cannons – $116

Total Indivdual MSRP: $422

Now, you could make the case that maybe the Freeguild Steelhelms are swapped with more Fusiliers or another unit. Sure. The $$$ would still be relatively close — it’s over $400 in Cities of Sigmar miniatures is the point. In fact, the Army set you see above came out with a price point of $200. And sure, it came with the Battletome and cards — but that is not the same number of miniatures. Which means the Grand Cathay Battalion is still cheaper and has more miniatures in it. I really don’t think that the round bases are making up the difference in cost here.

Just to reiterate, the Army of Grand Cathay is an entirely new range of plastic miniatures. They were designed using modern techniques and look like an Age of Sigmar Army. And yet, you’re going to be pay for them at a comparative discount because they are for The Old World. And let’s ALSO remember that when you’re buying a box of miniatures for The Old World you’re typically getting double what you’d get in an AoS Box for less than double the price.

20x Men-at-Arms is $85. 20x Freeguild Steelhelms is $116. That’s just science.

The Army of Grand Cathay is a going to be quite a deal to collect. The reason is that you’re going to get a “modern” style GW army at the prices you pay for The Old World. You’re going to want to get in on this one fast before GW catches on. Now I’m thinking of getting some round bases and swapping the Grand Cathay models over to an Age of Sigmar army purely for the savings.

I want to know how much the actual individual prices of these Grand Cathay units will be.
