A whole slew of new Primaris Units got unveiled today. Only a handful of new ones can round out the entire army.

So boy, oh boy has GW been cranking out out the Primaris units.  Here’s the tally so far, and I’m sure I’m missing one or two:

HQs

  • Marneus Calgar
  • Primaris Captain in Gravis Armor
  • Captain in Phobos Armor
  • Primaris Librarian
  • Librarian in Phobos Armor
  • Primaris Chaplain
  • Primaris Lieutenant
  • Lieutenant in Phobos Armor

TROOPS

  • Intercessors
  • Infiltrators

ELITES

  • Primaris Ancient
  • Primaris Apothecary
  • Reivers
  • Aggressors
  • Redemptor Dreadnought

FAST ATTACK

  • Inceptors
  • Suppressors

HEAVY SUPPPORT

  • Hellblasters
  • Eliminators
  • Repulsor
  • Repulsor Executioner

The New Guys

Then we got the blurry pics of the following, some of which look new and some are probably the full option/detail kits of the Shadowspear units.

  • New Vehicle (looks like a “hover Rhino/Razorback Mk.III to me)
  • New Dreadnought (possibly melee based)
  • Possible New Infantry squad (on the left)

The new Primaris rumors that have been batting around for months are almost entirely fulfilled now between the Shadowspear and this set. If you look closely and take a big picture look at the range, you quickly come to the conclusion that GW now has an almost complete standalone army of Primaris marines.

The Last Units Primaris Need

There are only a small number of holes in the range compared to the giant Classic Marine army:

A Speeder/Bike Equivalent

The new range is thin in the Fast Attack area, and could use a two-man light vehicle, say the Primaris version of a Land Speeder/Attack Bike.

A Melee Unit

The entire range is very skewed towards shooting compared to the classic range. This is almost certainly by design, but it’s nice to have options.  Reivers just can’t cut the mustard in hand to hand, but a unit based on either Inceptors (fast), or Aggressors (tough) with hard hitting melee weapons would give commanders some hand to hand options. Of course that new Dreadnought may be melee focussed. You look at that blurry pic up there and tell me if you think it’s setup for hand to hand combat.

That’s one idea of what to do with all the old Scouts

Techmarine

The Primaris range has zero Techmarine support. I’d expect a clampack elite one of these days. If it came as part of an all new plastic Thunderfire kit with new weapon options it would be perfect.

A Flyer

GW has an interesting choice here. Some of the plastic classic marine flyers aren’t too old, and with no Transport capacity does it really matter if they are Primaris units or not?  One day GW could make an all new kit, or they could just stick the PRIMARIS keyword on the flyer datasheets and let modelers swap out the pilot head bit – done!

Bonus Request – Primaris Lieutenant Commander!

This is just a pet peeve. Back in the day, Marine army lists used to have Lieutenant Commanders. This is the #2 guy in the chapter and the right hand man of the Chapter Master. He outranks Captains, and gets sent out on key missions that don’t quite demand the Chapter Master’s personal attention. I just figured, GW loves Primaris Lieutenants so much, that one day when they get tired, they could get extra cheeky and give us a Primaris Lieutenant…Commander.

~ Are you surprised at how many Primaris units there are now?
