Goatboy’s 40K – A Last Bit of Shocking Death Guard

Goatboy here again with a Death Guard Shock Assault list.  I am writing this bad boy up right before the new Space Marine codex tidal wave is upon us… Praise Grandfather Nurgle!

I talked a bit about the Death Guard getting a nice boost on their Plague Marines due to some weapon choices, aura activations, and spell powers.  I decided – let’s go all in and write up something utilizing the Shock Assault rule.  This means a horde of Plague Marines doing dumb Plague Marine stuff!

First of all – I won more then I lost last year at the LVO with a Plague Marine list.  It wasn’t as nutty as a buddies but it still had a ton more Plague Marines than you normally see – 17 in total.  I had a lot of fun with it and while the shooting parts kinda sucked the assault ones always did good.  They jumped out, threw a ton of grenades, and then scared the poop out of anyone they sauntered up too, sneezed on their sandwich, and tried to tell them how nice Papa Nurgle is.

The Basics

Let’s throw down a basic unit and have them ride in a Rhino. I still love the old box of death and while it isn’t amazing – it does the job you need it to do – keep your stinky petes protected a bit.

-Troops-
Plague Marines X 7, 2 Plague Knives X 4, Flail of Corruption X 2, Plaguesword/Bolter – 133pts
-Dedicated Transport-
Chaos Rhino, Mark of Nurgle, Combi-Bolter X 2 – 74pts

Total – 207pts

Now, this is a bit expensive but you throw in some buddies and you start to see the charm of a unit that could – dish out 4d3 flail attacks, 21 poison attacks, and some 3 Balesword Attacks.  Throw in an Arch Contaminator Buddy and you got a reroll 1’s to hit and reroll wounds.  Heck throw in Blades of Putrification and now they have a +1 to wound, cause mortal wounds on 6’s, and throw veterans and they do it more on another +1.  Not too bad.  It isn’t amazing but it will scare the crap out of someone that decides to poopoo on these plague marines.  You are not even looking at the fun of a Grenade fest as well when you combo out and get the holy grail of mortal wound nonsense.

Originally I played with Ahriman but that is not fully Death Guard like we all want.  Which of course leads me into looking at a way to get a Brigade together because a whole ton of gross jerks running around sounds cool as heck.  It probably isn’t for the best – but one big Detachment of DG sounds more fluffy than anything else.

Nurgly Tactics

This is just a lot of green on the tabletop.  It doesn’t have the normal DG charm of Dreads and friends but it has a lot of bodies and feels very DG to me.  You could drop the Jump Pack on the Chaos lord if you want to go all non-index – it just seems like a useful thing to have someone that could jump out, yell surprise, and murder something.  Plus it just feels like a true DG list not some kind of weird combo shoved into Chaos to grant some annoying tanks/dreads/etc.

~Next week we got Marines coming so be on the lookout.
