If you’re just getting started with the Horus Heresy or if you’re a long time vet Games Workshop has tips on getting started.

The relaunch of the Horus Heresy is right around the corner with the Pre-orders happening this weekend. It’s kind of a big deal! The good news is that Games Workshop has some great information on joining the fray.

Warhammer: The Horus Heresy – Age of Darkness

If you are a long time player of Warhammer 40,000 then you’ll recognize many of the rules from previous editions of 40k . Specifically the game rules are built off the bones of Warhammer: 40,000 – 7th edition. But there are lots of tweaks that have been made over the years. So it’s going to feel similar but be sure to keep an eye out for those changes.

One really great thing to know about the rules is that you’re only going to need two books: The Core Rulebook and then the Liber Astartes OR Hereticus. Each of the two “Liber” books contains their respective rules for either the Loyalist (Astartes) or Traitor (Hereticus) Legions. Yep — that’s one “Liber” book for 9 Legions worth of rules. And by the way, these books are BIG.

“These are both one-stop shops for the Space Marines of each side, with rules for all the weapons and units available to the Legiones Astartes, as well as special abilities and unique units for nine full Legions each.”

Now if you’re wondering about a few of the other factions in the Heresy Era don’t fret. Those rules are coming a little later but they are in the works!

As for the rest of the stuff you’ll need to get started, well, you probably already know. You’ll need the typical set of wargaming goodies — dice, rangefinders, a tabletop to play on, terrain, etc. Assuming you’ve got all that, all you’ll need now is…an army.

Good news on that front: The Horus Heresy starter box is an awesome place to start. Not only to you get a bunch of miniatures, it’s also got the Core Rulebook as well as a bunch of the extras you’ll need to play. Realistically, if you’re keeping all the miniatures for yourself, all you’ll need to start playing is the box plus your respective Liber Astartes or Hereticus book. Oh and you’ll need a table and an opponent…those are hard to fit in the box.
