Warhammer 40K: The New And Improved Aegis Defence Line

3 Minute Read
Dec 5 2022

The Astra Militarum have a new Aegis Defence Line on the way and it’s different that the previous incarnation. How different? Let’s find out.

So it turns out that yes, that is indeed a new Aegis Defence Line. It was actually in the book and yes, I did just skip over it because I saw “Aegis Defence Line” and went right by it.

Well today, GW is talking about it and I wanted to go back and take a closer look at the actual rules and compare it to the previous incarnation. So how’s this new Aegis Defence Line compare to the old one?

First things first the new model is a pretty nice upgrade. Not only is it a modular kit it just looks a lot more involved than the previous one.

It also appears to interlock a lot better although I’d like to get my hands on it to find out just how, exactly it fits together. There’s also a larger palisade for models to stand on and fire from. That seems like a pretty great addition! Rules-wise we also have a pretty good idea of what it’s going to do because we have the book:

It’s really just a piece of terrain in the new book. It has no stats and therefore it can’t be targeted which makes it “invulnerable” according to GW. What it does have is a boatload of abilities that benefit anyone getting cover from it:

  • Defence Line
  • Light Cover
  • Heavy Cover
  • Defensible

It also has a fancy ability that helps out against the AP of attacks. Reinforced Construction seems pretty darn handy!

I really like the look of the kit. I also appreciate that all the rules are clearly spelled out within the Core Rules. However there is one thing I’m noticing that is missing from this Aegis Defence Line compared to the previous version:

Did you spot it? It’s right in the middle of the box…

The Auto-turret is gone! It’s not even in the rule for the Defence Line datacard. While I’m a little bummed about that getting removed it does clean-up the rules for the Aegis Defence Line a bit. No more worrying about who had control of the feature and how the gun targeting worked. Plus we got that new palisade to shoot from. Sacrifices had to be made.

So what do you think of the new Aegis Defence Line? Will you be adding it to your Astra Militarum lists?
