Fans rejoice – the wait to see Mario take on the King of the Koopas just got shorter. The Super Mario Bros. Movie has a new, earlier release date.

In the upcoming movie, Princess Peach helps Mario get ready to square off against the all-powerful Bowser to stop his plans from conquering the world. It brings in a ton of characters and locations from the games (as it should). Mario trains on a course that’s taken straight from the 1980s side scroller, and he fights Donkey Kong on a red steel girder. Oh, and there are karts.

Video game adaptations tend to flunk – but The Super Mario Bros. Movie looks like a celebration of Nintendo that’s going to be a lot of fun for fans of all ages. It keeps the game’s simple story, and its sense of fun, and the animation looks fantastic. And its director is promising my issues with Chris Pratt won’t be issues at all.

“He’s really good at playing a blue-collar hero with a ton of heart. For the way that Mario is characterized in our film, he’s perfect for it. When people hear Chris Pratt’s performance, the criticism will evaporate.”

Ok, I’ll give Pratt a shot – but I still think Pedro Pascal or Charles Martinet would have been a better choice.
