Warhammer Fest revealed even more Warhamemr 10th Edition rules, on top of a big ole Leviathan boxed set minis.  Let’s jump on it and catch up on the last week of awesomeness!

Goatboy here waiting for the dying gasps of 9th to finish off, and looking forward to 10th edition.

10th’s Newly Revealed Rules

The biggest bit of info is how missions work in the new game.  I think we haven’t seen the entire thing nor really how we will engage with matched play – but we did get a lot of fun things. It looks like a Mission deck is now a part of this release, with the old ideas of customizable options being the big key takeaway.

10th Edition Deployment

We will start at the top with deployment zone and the idea of it being random.  I think it is great for a pickup game but an Event will most likely run locked in deployment zones – especially if they are going towards the GW terrain setup. I am sure will see all events just lock it in and I suspect will see a Matched Play set up from GW when their events start running.

The other bit of deployment info is pushing things to the shorter table edge than the long edge.  It feels a bit weird as we are all used to how much of a pain the shorter edge can be.  Trying to reach across the table, set up etc, and dancing from side to side.  We’ll see if there is less of the full side for the deployment and instead a lot of push to quarters etc.  It does do some interesting things, like pushing things back a bit to leave some of the fast assault armies from hitting you right away.

Gambits

The last little bit is the Gambit thing and while it could cause a lot of heartache in a game I get the feeling upper-end players will not be messing with it.  I like the idea of having a chance for a comeback but it really looks too hard to “try” for and get instead of the oops I got it style of thing.  It might feel more like the old Seize the Initiative we used to dread where games got accidentally decided by a roll of a 6 before the game began.  Again well have to see if it is something to really be worried about.

Missions and Objectives

I would think more of a discussion should be had about the new missions and how players win or lose.  The move to 2 “missions” that you can lock thru your game means a lot harder avenue to try and earn those 45 points.  A lot of the time missions can be dependent on what your opponent lets you do to their army so if you don’t have enough options to hit that 20+ points you need to fill in half the score it gets harder to justify locking it down.  We’ll just have to see how balanced it is to do random vs locked in when we get the deck box to look at.

Leviathan Boxed Set

Of course, the new 10th Edition Leviathan boxed set exploded out this weekend too.  I will say it is a pretty impressive set of minis and depending on the cost – and could be a really insane value.  You get a ton of models to help both armies.  It feels very much a continuation of the last Indomintus boxed set where you had a good deal of stuff for Space Marines and then the similar set up towards Nids with a bunch of smaller troops (like Necron Warriors), small elite option, a few HQ’s, and a big monster or two.

Which, of course means those wanting to do Nids can get a good start to their armies or … trade off their Marines for more Nids.  Those who have decided to go Marines can also have a good deal of stuff to add to them, with the Flamers, Sternguard, Characters, and kinda tall Dreadnought.  It really depends on what GW decided to charge for this boxed set in the end.  I hope we don’t see it hit the Horus Heresy Starter Box pricepoint  of £185 240€ $310.While that box was pretty gnarly – it was expensive.

New 10th Edition Minis

On the Model design front – the Nids really have pushed a more Body horror style design.  With things slaved to the main model and the whole idea of mutation running hard in the army, it is a very unique change to their build.  Everything looks “bigger” and spread out, with the Carnifex getting real mad with its arms and the whole gross eating bug going crazy with its mouth and tentacles.  I don’t know if I want to play bugs but I get the feeling I will be painting some either for the site or maybe get lucky to have some show up on GW’s page in the future.

Oh and don’t forget the Winged Tyranid Prime Warrior we saw.  Of course, we saw more in the upcoming weekend, but the model looks ok to me.  I love that it isn’t jumping in the air with some kind of crazy outstretched wings.  That makes it harder to travel with, harder to move around the table, and leaves a lot of weird interactions on what you can see and not see.  Still, it looks kind of weird and almost too thick in some places.  I always like the idea of the winged Nids being less beefy to showcase why they are flying etc.  Still, with it showing up in the big boxed set will see a ton of these on the tabletop and in the alleyways of eBay.

The Marines look very much Marine-like which isn’t a bad thing.  I like the little flamer guys as it is a unit that makes sense as a Tyranid-cleaning option.  It does mean you don’t want to charge into these guys as they can easily light you up – especially if you’ve been Oath’d.  I am hoping the Power Sword is better, as while it looks cool on the Terminator Captain it is something you have to wonder would be the best option.

Into 2023

Finally, we got the release schedule which isn’t a rapid fire explosion of books and codexes.  We’ll really have to wait and see what the Codex layout will be, especially as all the units will have rules when we start this game.  If the main armies units changes or we get something dirty in a book we might have to wait a long while to get our favorite armies update.  But hey – since Nids are coming out first maybe they won’t be busted this time… right?

So who is excited for 10th?  How many boxes are you going to get?  I am kinda excited to get the new rule book and read all the “fluff” movement – especially after Vashtorr got his “win” while the Nids descend to eat all.
