The latest international trailer for Dune: Part Two unveils a glimpse of the formidable arsenal wielded by the Fremen.

At the end of the first movie, House Harkonnen regains its control over Arrakis. They aim to keep their power using a heavy arsenal and the backing of the Emperor. But there is a power rising against them, led by a boy they thought they’d killed. The story and setting are about to get much bigger. Dune: Part Two covers the second half of the classic sci-fi novel, starting with Paul and Jessica’s trek to the Fremen sietch. This half will bring more interplanetary politics, Paul’s rise as a leader, and the fight for Arrakis’ freedom that becomes Muad’Dib’s Jihad.

A new trailer from Japan has popped up on Twitter. This has more battle scenes and dramatic beats than the trailers we’ve seen so far. The post translated (poorly by Google) reads “Dune Sand Planet Part 2 – now, at the time of the decisive battle, an epic story about the hegemony of the whole universe begins.” It debuts there early in 2024, rather than fall of this year.

Beyond the First Novel

Director Denis Velleuve doesn’t want to leave the story incomplete – he wants to adapt Dune: Messiah and make this a trilogy. He told EW before Part Two was greenlit:

“I always envisioned three movies. It’s not that I want to do a franchise, but this is Dune, and Dune is a huge story. In order to honor it, I think you would need at least three movies. That would be the dream. To follow Paul Atreides and his full arc would be nice. Herbert wrote six books, and the more he was writing, the more it was getting psychedelic. So I don’t know how some of them could be adapted. One thing at a time. If I ever have the chance to do Dune: Part Two and Dune Messiah, I’m blessed.”

I hope he gets that chance. The first movie proved that Velleuve understands the universe. He gets what makes it tick, as well as its lead characters and their motivations. This is our best shot at getting Paul’s story on the big screen.
