Goatboy’s Warhammer 40K: First Week of 10th – What have We Learned?

It’s been one week with 40K 10th Edition. Here’s what we’ve learned while reading, playing, and complaining about #NEW40K.

Of course, we had fun in that too – but again it was a crazy week.  I haven’t gotten to play a huge amount of games due to kids, summer, AC eating it (in TX summer) , and of course, work on top of that.  But let’s talk about the week.

Leviathan Ships

First of all – we got the formal Leviathan release last week.  I ran out and grabbed my set and blew out my budget just due to the hefty sized box, a portable AC unit (Texas is hot without working AC), and just trying to keep my monster kids fed.  But I had to have my plastic toys, and while I haven’t cracked it open yet – I plan on trying to get some stuff traded out to get more things I want.  The life of a 40K lifer –  buying things you don’t build right away so you can have it later when a terrible armylist idea strikes like lightning!

Anyway the box came out, most stores had all they needed, and people are rejoicing to have the full book and cards in their hands.  This is a great thing, as a new boxed set is great for your local FLGs and you get to hopefully drag in some new players to deal with the nonsense that is 40K.

Heck, we even saw a few events run some of the new 10th Edition as the 40K basic rules were released digitally earlier. Thank you GW – more of this please. While we didn’t have the “competitive” event packet most events tried out some things.  Of course, the biggest thing out of it is that the top 5 armies I talked about seemed to be the top 5 armies winning the game right now.  Go figure eh?

Forge World Drops

On top of all of that we got some Forge World Updates as well.  I don’t know who loves Eldar so much but they got to keep a ton of resin nonsense while the poor CSM and Chaos options are left wondering why their heavily converted plastic nonsense is left to die on the vine.  We’ll see how this could change later.  But both flavors of Knights (spiky and fascist) got their new variants, and all of them are pretty dang sweet.  I can’t wait to see the new plastic Cerastus Lancer chassis that will most likely have all the FW options as upgrades before long.  Just having a plastic monster to convert to some kind of Chaos masterpiece will be exciting to me.

Event Packets

We also finally got our Tournament packet with some small rules changes (objectives are no longer hot lava).  I love the terrain table placement options as well as all the mission combos.  There is enough for any TO to easily create an event and try to keep their terrain within the same lanes as GW.  I do wonder if will see a lot more basic areas used with floating pieces to create the tables.  I just like the idea that tables will be similar enough and events will be more in sync.

10th Edition Metawatch

Of course the Meta Watch also had a ton of info with some promised updates to curtail some of the nasty things we see right now.  I love the idea of knocking some things down but we should also try to help some of the poor factions left at the bottom.  Death Guard looks real rough right now and a worse winning percentage than Ad Mech.  I don’t know how to fix it without a serious reworking of their index and rules but will see.  As there isn’t a book coming soon for them they can easily “reshuffle” the pdf.

I am hoping to have gotten another game by the time you read this.  I am planning on bringing out some Lord of Skulls for some nonsense just due to the nature of the next even I am playing coming up towards the end of July.  I really don’t expect the full nonsense to be toned down until later this year so will see if I can get my Tonka trucks of doom to do the good work for Goatboy –  true Chaos God of nonsense.

How are you holding up with 10th Edition after week 1?
