A new Devil May Cry anime series is in the works from the team behind Netflix’s Castlevania.

The Devil May Cry video game series was initially released in 2001 and quickly became one of Capcom’s biggest franchises. It’s sold around 30M copies worldwide. It centers on Dante, a demon hunter out for revenge. The characters for the game have also appeared in crossovers like Marvel vs. Capcom.

This isn’t the first time Devil May Cry has gotten the anime treatment. It got a self-contained series set between Devil May Cry and Devil May Cry 2 from Toshiki Inoue and Madhouse back in 2007. It got so-so reviews. We can hope that this new take does a better job of adapting the game and its lead character.

In the new series, sinister forces aim to open a portal between the demon and human realms. At the center of the battle to stop it is Dante, the orphaned demon hunter for hire. The announcement video shows off the animation style and Dante’s slick fighting moves.

Netflix has ordered eight episodes from Studio Mir. Alex Larsen is writing, and Adi Shankar (who created Netflix’s Castlevania) is running the project. Shankar wants to do five seasons with a vampire-filled Castlevania cross-over.

“In this animated adaptation of the popular Capcom game, sinister forces are at play to open the portal between the human and demon realms. In the middle of it all is Dante, an orphaned demon-hunter-for-hire, unaware that the fate of both worlds hangs around his neck.”

Neither a drop date nor a voice cast has been announced yet. Production begins next month, so I’m expecting there will be a list soon after. Reuben Langdon, who has been Dante’s English voice for years, has said he was not asked to join the project.

This is one in a series of Capcom game-inspired shows coming to Netflix. So far, they’ve released animated shows based on Monster Hunter, Dragon’s Dogma, and Resident Evil. A Resident Evil live-action show dropped last year and got canned after a season due to bad reviews.

Next up is an Onimusha anime series overseen by Takashi Miike – the first trailer was dropped last week, and it’ll be available on the streamer in November.
