Godzilla Minus One goes back to the iconic monster’s destructive beginning. Check out the first destruction-filled trailer.

Since its big screen debut in 1954, Godzilla has become an icon not just of movies but television, comics, animation, and books. He’s been a destroyer and a hero. Over the years, the King of Monsters has been the star of multiple big-screen adaptations. Titles include some real classics like Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, Shin Godzilla, King of All Monsters, Destroy All Monsters, and many more.

A new movie is debuting this winter. Most of the movies out in the last couple of decades have shown a contemporary version of the King of Monsters. This goes back on the timeline to the start–it’s set in postwar Japan.

“Postwar Japan has lost everything. The film depicts an existence that gives unprecedented despair. The title Godzilla Minus One was created with this in mind. In order to depict this, the staff and I have worked together to create a setting where Godzilla looks as if ‘fear’ itself is walking toward us, and where despair is piled on top of despair. I think this is the culmination of all the films I have made to date, and one that deserves to be ‘experienced’ rather than ‘watched’ in the theater. I hope you will experience the most terrifying Godzilla in the best possible environment.”

Godzilla Minus One Details & Cast

This is the first new Toho Godzilla film since 2016. The movie is written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki and stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Kuranosuke Sasaki. It features music by Naoki Sato.

In postwar Japan, a new terror rises; Godzilla. Will the devastated people be able to survive… let alone fight back?

The movie will premiere in Japan on November 3, the 69th anniversary of the release of Ishirō Honda’s original film. The rest of the world will have to wait a few more weeks to see it.

Godzilla Minus One debuts in theaters on December 1st.
