This massive LEGO Star Wars MC80 Mon Calamari Cruiser includes thousands of pieces and a detailed interior.

The MC80 Mon Calamari Cruiser is one of the most iconic big Rebel ships in Star Wars. First appearing in Return of the Jedi, the most famous ship of the class, Home One, acts as the flagship of the Alliance Fleet. This ship quickly became iconic as the backbone of the Rebel fleets. The MC80 class was known as one of the few classes of Rebel ships that could go toe-to-toe with an Imperial Star Destroyer.

Of course, Home One isn’t the only MC 80A out there. It and its variants were pretty common Rebel capital ships. One of her sister ships, the Independence also served at the Battle of Endor and beyond. Not only did these ships serve as command ships, with a number of iconic scenes taking place on them, but also as fighter carriers. The MC80 class could carry up to 10 squadrons depending on the configuration. Truly a classic ship.

Today we are taking a look at an amazing LEGO build of an MC80A Mon Calamari Cruiser. The builder, Matt Benner, has named it after the Independence, but it contains nods to other ships as well. You can find him on social media here and here.

This build contains over 20,000 pieces and is big enough that it needs to break apart for transport. It stands over a foot tall, and is several feet long. The whole thing is super impressive and comes apart to show detailed interior scenes which are really cool.

The Build

The whole set is just super fun with a ton of details. The upper deck contains the bridge, a command center and the classic Return of the Jedi briefing room from Home One. Below that you can find an engine room, hidden gambling den, some quarters and a big hanger bay. The hanger bay can hold three custom built A-Wings– with more set up around the ship.

My favorite room, and it appears to me Matt’s as well, is the pool/lake/atrium room. This room contains a large body of water, with a bit of a tropical theme. Several characters can be seen enjoying it and swimming in it. This is actually a very fun canonical detail built into the ship. Coming from a water world and being amphibious the Mon Calamari actually need a lot of water to survive and would put pools/lakes in their ships to allow them to feel more at home (one?).

This MOC is just such a really cool build. The amount of detail and work that Matt put into getting the rounded shapes (hard with LEGO) is incredible. I also love that he displayed it in a battle with a Victory Class Star Destroyer. Very cool!

Start Your Own Rebel Fleet

You too can own your own MC80 Mon Calamari Cruiser with ease. The LEGO Star Wars starship/midi-scale collection put one out less than a year ago. I’ve got one and it’s a great build with tons of details and fun easter eggs. It also has a nice little Nebulon-B Frigate and a side section can be removed to show the interior details. This is the first-ever set for this ship. While it might not be as impressive as Matt’s, it does display a bit easier!
