With Imperial Knights coming next weekend that leaves a handful of codexes left before they are all current – So who’s left waiting for a new update?

Since the last time we took a look at the list of Armies without a codex, GW has cranked out quite a few more. But with Knights on the horizon, we’re running on clues as to what codexes are actually next in line. Let’s run through the list and see if we can figure it out.

Chapter Approved 2017

Let’s start with Chapter Approved 2017 and all the Armies that were listed in there:

  • Adepta Sororitas
  • Deathwatch
  • Drukhari
  • Genestealer Cults
  • Harlequins
  • Imperial Knights
  • Necrons
  • Orks
  • Space Wolves
  • T’au Empire
  • Thousand Sons

These were all armies that were listed and were highly likely to get a codex. So far we’ve had quite a few of those actually get a book. Let’s remove the ones that have a book now or one on the way (Knights).

  • Adepta Sororitas
  • Genestealer Cults
  • Orks
  • Space Wolves

That leaves 4 books. Now, we know that GW has already confirmed Adeptus Sororitas (aka Sister of Battle) for 2019.

And we’ve seen something big and green on the horizon, too:

Ork Teaser…waiting to see more!

That’s two codexes we know are on the way…eventually.

GW also called out the Genestealer Cult specifically in the new beta Tactical Reserve rules:

So it’s a safe bet that GW is taking them into account and they will have a new book soon enough. The one force that GW has been eerily silent about has been Space Wolves. Now, we saw the rumor-mill get spun-up about a Daemon version of Leman Russ. This turned out to be a hoax. However, one part of the rumor has stuck around and that is that Russ is the next Primarch coming out for the Imperium. But I’m not putting much stock in that rumor for now. Why? Because we’ve got Summer of Sigmar 2.0 on the way with a June launch and then who knows what GW has planned for the Fall and Winter.

Place Your Bets

If I had to put money on it, I still think the next batch of Codexes will arrive after the Summer of Sigmar 2.0 release. And I think the next 3 books will be:

  • Orks
  • Genestealer Cult
  • Space Wolves

And that these 3 books will come out in the Fall/Winter timeframe. Sisters, unfortunately for their fans, will have to wait until 2019.

Long-shots and Random Musings

Before we sign-off on all those codexes let’s consider one other source for the lists of possible armies: The Indexes. If we remove the ones that were in Chapter approved we still have a few other armies that could potentially get books, too.

  • Imperial Agents
  • Talons of the Emperor
  • Legion of the Damned
  • *Daemons of Slaanesh/Khorne
  • *World Eaters
  • *Emperor’s Children

I’ve put asterisks by the Chaos armies because they technically have rules in their respective codexes (Chaos Space Marines / Chaos Daemons). Then again, we also got rules for Thousand Sons and Death Guard. So, you never know! Oh and let’s not discount what the return of Slaanesh on the AoS side of the house could mean for the 40k universe:

Daemonette Claw…or something BIGGER?

That leaves the orphaned children of the Emperor: Imperial Agents, Talons of the Emperor, Legion of the Damned. Now – the Talons did get half-replaced with the Adeptus Custodes Book. That leaves the Sisters of Silence out. And the LotD have typically been an Elite Unit that was bolted on to the Space Marines in some way. And Imperial Agents…well, there are quite a few random mini-factions that could be rolled into one book I suppose.

Imperial Navy Book? Now that’s a Long-Shot!

Once again we are all left to wonder what’s next for GW and their Codex releases. We’ve got some highly probably candidates and some long-shots…But only GW knows what’s really in store for the back-half of 2018!

What books do you think are next? If you had to pick a long-shot codex (Squats!), who would you want to see (Squats!!)? Let us know in the comments below!
