40K is a miniature converters dream. Here are some of the best Xenos kits that really give hobbyists a lot of mileage!

If there’s something I love to see – it’s a hobbyist with a wild idea and the will to make it happen. From Ork looted .. well anything, to custom regiments and chapters – you can make your creative dreams a reality in the grimdark.

As we were chatting in the office (remotely) about some of out favorite conversions we got to talking about which kits in particular offer a lot of cool bits and unusual options that are just perfect for conversions. Goatboy who paints and converts professionally threw in a few of his favorites.

We already did :

Onto the Xenos

In no particular order here are our recommendations for you aspiring alien hobbyists. Follow those links to take a look at the Xenos (Necrons, T’au and Ork) kits’ sprues and let your own creative gears start turning. Don’t worry we’ll do all the Tyranids/GSC later as they are so different.

Ork Mega-Nobs

Ork kits are generally fantastic for conversions. They already have a haphazard vibe to them, are very forgiving in assembly and have lots of generically useful bits. The Mega Nobs are easily  mixed and matched with stuff like Ad Mech, Chaos, and even some Astra Militarum stuff. These big dues not only give you the basic models but lots of little extras like the KFF, weapon bits, boss poles, and such.

Necron Lychguard/Praetorians

The dual built kit is loaded down with extra weapons, the super cool shields, plus lots of little robot gubbins. These guys can go a long way mixed in with Ad-Mech, and perhaps even some Tau accessories.

Ork Flash Gitz

The Flash Gits are the basic infantry sized equivalents to everything we said about the Mega Nobs above. Plue all the Orky back banners you would ever want or need. The weapons are just nuts and we went with the creativity of this kit over the older Loota/Tankbusta kit. These are Flash Gitz, so glue on anything from any range that looks like a weapon and you’re good to go. Also – pirate hat and aiming squig bits are not to be underestimated.

Tau Fire Warrior Breacher Team

The meat and potatoes of the Tau. These guys are just loaded down with that techno japanese vibe. You get so many grenades, guns, shouldperpads, backpacks and even some drones thrown in for good measure. There are lots of great conversions to be had with combos of these guys, Cadians, Scions, and Skitarii. Go Wild!

Necron Canoptek Wraiths

These guys give you lots of talons, whips, tentacles and creepy ZOIDS techno robot bits. Ad Mech, and Drukhari would be the best fit for conversions, but don’t overlook the Chaos Deamon Engines potential as well. All kinds of Abominable Intellegences await your hobby genius!

Honorable Mention: Tau Crisis Suits

Another great kit with tons of weapons, upgrade systems and some drones thrown in for fun. Their larger size makes them harder to mix and match with the infantry of the game, but there are still lots of “beefy” minis you can kitbash out of these. Mix them with Kataphron Destroyers, Ogryn, Mega Nobs, Termys or Oblits for true abominations! Penitent Engines…maybe?
