The Galaxy far far away is getting a little bigger as The Book of Boba Fett is officially announced for a Disney Plus December 2021 release.

Last week The Mandalorian’s second season wrapped up with an episode that tugged on all of our heartstrings just a little, wrapping up the Grogu story arc and leaving viewers wondering what the future has in store for the show’s various Mandalorians. And those of us who stuck through the credits for the bonus scene got a hint of an answer when Fennec and Boba took over the palace formerly belonging to Jabba the Hutt and Boba Fett took his place on the former crime lord’s throne before letting us know that Boba and Fennec would be returning in The Book of Boba Fett.

Earlier today the official Twitter account for The Mandalorian gave us a little more information, revealing that the show will star Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen, will be executive produced by Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Robert Rodriguez, and has a prospective Disney Plus release date of December 2021.

Fans have been understandably curious about what this means for the future of the Mandalorian. Both seem slated to air in the same month next year, but with so many loose ends left to tie up and so much more Mandalorian history to delve in (and hopefully a planet to return to) many don’t want to trade one fan-favorite character’s story for another’s.

Earlier today, writer, director, and producer on The Mandalorian Jon Favreau went on Good Morning America to clarify the entire situation.

“And the end of the show, it said ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ coming December 2021. And that wasn’t part of the big Disney announcement. We wanted to hold this back because we didn’t want to spoil the surprise of all the big Disney shows when Kathleen Kennedy was up there. We wanted to keep this secret. This is actually separate from The Mandalorian Season 3. But what we didn’t say, and what Kathy said is the next chapter is The Book of Boba Fett, and we go into production right after that on Season 3 of The Mandalorian, back with the main character we have all known and loved. We’re working on that pre-production now while we’re working on Boba Fett.”

Despite Mandalorian’s season 3 being announced as part of the collection of announcements on Disney’s Investor Day while The Book of Boba Fett was not, they will be separate projects within the same timeline and presumably with at least a little overlap. Boba Fett and Fennec’s stand-alone series was not announced because the post-credit reveal was very soon and the Star Wars team knew that the short wait would be worth the surprise.

Are you looking forward to The Book of Boba Fett’s premier and season three of The Mandalorian? What plot thread or storyline do you hope they tackle with these shows? Which characters do you want to see make an appearance as the galaxy far far away continues adding to the Disney Plus universe? Let us know in the comments!
