The Slaves to Darkness are getting a new Battletome in the near future. So which army should get a new Battletome after chaos?

Last month we did a quick check to see which Battletomes were out, which were announced, and which Armies still needed a new book. And with Chaos getting a new Slaves to Darkness book after the Ogor Mawtribes, we started wondering…who’s next?

We’re super excited to see the new Battletomes coming for Age of Sigmar and we’re looking forward to the Slave to Darkness Army Box for sure. But what does GW have planned next?

Now that we know what’s still to be released let’s see if we can logic our way through them to figure out if they are going to be very near, near, far, or very far out.

Cities of Sigmar/Dawnbringer Crusades – Very far out. Why? Because GW is just now teasing us with the 3D digital versions of their upcoming kits. This may be “the new army” for the game when it drops, too.

Kharadron Overlords – Near. They got their book at the start of 2020. And while it’s functional it’s still missing a lot of the “new” stuff and style of the current edition books. They also got their new hero Drekki Flynt not too long ago. I think this book is closer than the Cities of Sigmar book by a wide margin.

Seraphon – Very Near. Seraphon are still a powerhouse with Lord Kroak and they also got their book in 2020. Personally, I keep hoping for an revamped Saurus kit and GW keeps teasing us with new Blood Bowl Lizard models. Also, in the current storyline, we’ve got the events of the Gnarlwood happening. Those events revolve around a crashed Seraphon ship. It would make a lot of sense if GW capstoned those events with a Seraphon Battletome. Fingers crossed their new book is coming soon.

Beasts of Chaos – Far. Why are they far out? Well, strangely, they are doing just fine in the current meta. The White Dwarf updates really did a number on their win rates and they are holding it down! Then again, that 63% might be a sign that they need some more attention to “fix” them. A new book sure would do that…

Hedonites of Slaanesh – Far. Hedonites got a new book in 2020. They also got a massive range update, too. I’m not saying they don’t need a book — I just don’t think they are very high priority right now.

Blades of Khorne -Very Near. Blades of Khorne got a book in 2019. This means they have one of the older Battletomes out there and while they might be sitting at a 50% win rate, I hope they are at or near the top of the list to get a new Battletome. Plus, the World Eaters are getting a ton of love from GW in 40k (soon) — hopefully some of that bleeds over into AoS.

Flesh-Eater Courts – Near. Another 2019 book that’s also hovering at a solid 52% win rate. Based on the numbers, I don’t think there’s ton wrong with the book right now — but it is missing all the cool, new stuff for AoS 3.0. I also think this is one army that could also use some more models in the range in general. It’s seriously only got a handful of kits — and many pull double (or triple) duty. But it’s just enough to call it an army. Of the 3 Death Factions that need books, this one probably has the most potential for “new” stuff GW could create and add.

Ossiarch Bonereapers – Very Near. Maybe next?! Okay, okay. I’m wishlisting this one but it’s at the very top of my personal list. Why do I want a new book for them so bad? Well, aside from their win rate of 43% (according to GW) and their Battletome from 2019 (which really came out at the tail end of 2018) this army is hurting. Age of Sigmar 3.0 kinda screwed them over. Hard. The FAQ for them was unimpressive. And the White Dwarf updates helped…but are also don’t seem to have fixed any of the deep problems with the army. And yeah, I am biased here — but that doesn’t mean I’m wrong. AoS 3.0 fundamentally changed the game and basically took a bunch of stuff that made the OBR cool and unique and gave it to everyone else. And to compensate they got to …keep their points from the previous edition. Great.

Soulblight Gravelords – Very Far. Soulblight got their book basically at the tail end of AoS 2.0 and it certainly has that “designed for the next edition” kinda vibe when you look at the book. It might be missing some of the new tricks from the current edition but it’s not in a terrible spot. I wouldn’t mind seeing them get a new book sooner but I’m also not incharge of Battletome release dates, either. They also got Cado Ezechiar as a new character model. I dunno if that’s a sign they are getting a new book or a snack to hold the players over until they get a new book.

Gloomspite Gitz – Near. The only reason I’m not saying very near for them is because Destruction just got 2 books back-to-back. Does that rule out the Gitz getting a book soon? I hope not! This is another army that got a big range revamp back in 2019 and got a lot of attention and then a whole lot of silence. It would be nice to see them get a new book, too.

My rankings don’t really count for a whole lot, but those are where I’m pegging these armies in terms of releases. If I had to pick 3 books I’d like to see get a new Battletome the fastest here’s my list:

  • Ossiarch Bonereapers
  • Blades of Khorne
  • Seraphon

Maybe not in that exact order — but we can all wishlist, right?
