We’re kicking off Pride month with some of the most under-appreciated characters in the Sailor Moon fandom. It’s time for Sailor Starlights cosplays to shine!

The Sailor Moon franchise has long been a core staple of the gay community. From a young age, I didn’t know if I wanted to BE a Sailor Scout or if I wanted to be WITH a Sailor Scout. Suffice to say… the answer is a firm BOTH.

The Sailor Scouts from Sailor Moon are paragons of virtue, power, and unwavering loyalty. The Sailor Scouts have remained in our hearts for generations. This week, we’re shedding light on some of the under appreciated stars of the Sailor Moon universe – the Sailor Starlights!

Celebrating Pride Through Cosplay

To boost the signal of Pride month this year, we’re featuring the best and brightest stars in the galaxy. From anime to video games, comics to movies and beyond, we’re going to spend the month of June bringing all the LGBTQ+ characters into the light. The Sailor Starlights were a group of Sailor Senshi, or Sailor Scouts, sent to Earth to search for their lost princess after their home was destroyed. Their journey put them at odds with the Sailor Scouts of Earth, leading to many conflicts. These characters are most notable for disguising themselves as men while on Earth. Their gender fluid appearance allowed them to hide in plain sight, and shows another instance of how diverse and rich the cultural norms in the Sailor Moon franchise were. Representation in media is so important for young folks trying to find themselves, and the Sailor Starlights show just how much is possible when we are allowed to be comfortable and dress to please ourselves, not others.

As we begin this year’s Pride Month, we hope to show the diversity that exists in pop-culture cosplay. This month is going to be a feature of all the people in the LGBTQ+ community. If you have a character or cosplayer that you would like to see represented this month, shoot us a comment or email to [email protected]. We would love to hear from you! Happy Pride Month, make great choices, and remember- “Believe in yourself and nothing can stop you.”
